I will be no longer be...

... considered "obese" according to my BMI in 0.8 of a pound. When I WI next week, I'm like 90% positive I will have lost the 0.8lbs that it takes to drag me down into the overweight category. That will be soooo awesome :)

Why I eat under my points

As you can see on this page, my weeklies that I've eaten has shot up dramatically from my first month and a half OP. My first two weeks (Sept), I averaged about 1 WP per day. My first full month (Oct), I averaged about 1.6 WP per day. In November, I had a few rough weeks and my average shot up to 7.5 WP per day. That's REALLY high and that basically means that in November I basically at all my weeklies and then MORE.

Last month (Dec), I averaged 6.5 WP per day which was great for a holiday month with parties and trips, etc. I strived to bring that number down from my November average and I was able to.

My DPA has only gone down 5 points so far. It only drops 1 point at a time. So the reason I've been going over into so many WP is all mental because living on one less point per day isn't difficult. I think I'm getting worried about living on 29 PP. But at least living on 29 PP won't be forever. Once I hit goal weight, my maintenance points will go up.

Lately I've been purposely eating light lunches and breakfasts because I know I don't need to eat that much food. If I strive to be BELOW my number of DPA each day, I usually can achieve it. If I don't think about it every day, I end up above my DPA especially at this time of year because I have a drawer full of candy from my stocking on christmas day.

Sometimes I only end up eating 25 PPs in a day. That usually happens when I have a light dinner and a normal lunch because I'm not hungry until after 12pm. Those are good days and they help make up for the days when I'm going crazy with hunger lol. :)

TV Show Quote

So I've been watching this show called Sister Wives. Don't judge me. I started watching it because I was curious. But anyways, the four wives had been working out for a month and got weighed in, three of them expected to lose 10lbs each. They had dropped about 3lbs each and were disappointed. Their trainer tells them,

"You don't want to just drop 10 pounds 'boom' (drops clipboard). 'kay, I just dropped that, that easy right? Well, I can pick it up that easy."

Pretty interesting way of looking at it. I never thought of it like that, like dropping something and picking it up. He went on to talk about someone bragging about losing 10lbs in a week and someone mentioning it and he said that he'd gained 15lbs back.

Competition

It's funny how competitive I am. The reason I've been striving to get these last two pounds to push me up into the 30lb lost mark is because this week is my SAS (stay and succeed) 16th week. Two or three weeks ago, I saw another girl get a 5lb sticker for losing 30lbs the same week she got her SAS. It shows the rest of the meeting that your average is around 2lbs a week. It's exciting! That's why I want to get my 2lbs tonight. I just had to challenge myself to do it.

For some reason, most of the stickers given out are for things like 5%, 10% and 5lbs between 5 and 20lbs total. There doesn't seem to be a lot of rewards being given atm for things like 30lbs and up. It's exciting for me, to have a large loss like that when they seem to be few and far between, but when the people who've lost more than me get a reward, I get jealous lol... kinda like I'll never get there... but as we see, sitting 2lbs away from the 30lbs and my SAS in the same week, I can get there.

Fast Food

I realized, while commenting on a post on babycenter.com, that I haven't had any fast food since mid September when we started on Weight Watchers. I had 2 pieces of stuffed crust pizza with family after my cousin's funeral but I don't really consider pizza fast food (we eat homemade stuff every week and I get pizza at my favourite restaurant most of the time).

Other than times where my family normally would be eating at fast food places, I don't miss it at all. We went on the ferry and normally on trips out of town like that, I would be eating McD's for breakfast rather than ferry food since it's cheaper.

I've thought about going to Wendy's for tuesday treat dinner but when the time rolls around, I haven't checked the points on what I want, and I've decided I'd rather have mac and cheese :)

Obviously I really just don't want it anymore.

Yo-yo dieting?

I just don't get it...

I guess you need to know what I THINK yo-yo dieting is...

I think that yo-yo dieting is:

  • dieting on and off
  • for no reason (christmas for example is a good reason to slow loss down or maintain or just not diet for a week or so)
  • trying multiple diets
  • gaining the weight back (or some of it) and then just going back to losing it
  • basically gaining and losing mostly the same pounds over and over again....

It doesn't make sense to me. Why stop losing if you do in fact have the control to go back to it over and over again? Won't it just be easier to keep going?

Thanksgiving Foods

Here's the two things I made for thanksgiving.
Easy Rosemary Garlic Parmesan Biscuits
Skinny Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Easy Rosemary Garlic Parmesan Biscuits
ORIGINAL SOURCE

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp melted salted butter
  • 1 tbsp EVOO
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1/2 tbsp fresh chopped rosemary (I used dried
  • 2 cups Heart Smart Bisquick (I used regular)
  • 3 oz shredded parmesan cheese
  • 2/3 cup skim milk
Directions:

Preheat oven to 400°. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Melt butter in a small pan, add oil and half the garlic; sauté on low heat about 1 minute.Remove from heat and add chopped rosemary.
In a large bowl, combine biscuit mix, parmesan cheese, and remaining garlic. Stir in milk and mix (do not over mix). Drop batter by heaping tablespoonfuls (about 1.5 oz each) onto prepared cookie sheet.
Bake for 10 minutes. Brush biscuits with melted butter. Bake for 5 more minutes, or until lightly browned on the bottom.



I added cheese on top of the biscuits.

Skinny Garlic Mashed Potatoes
ORIGINAL SOURCE

Ingredients:

2 lbs (4 medium) potatoes, peeled and cubed
4 large garlic cloves, peeled and halved

1/4 cup fat free sour cream
1/4 cup fat free chicken broth

2 tablespoons skim milk
1 tbsp light butter
salt to taste

dash fresh ground pepper
1/4 cup fresh herbs of choice: parsley, thyme, tarragon

Directions:
Put potatoes and garlic in a large pot with salt and enough water to cover. Bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat. Simmer for 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender.Drain and return potatoes and garlic to pan.
Add sour cream and remaining ingredients. Using a masher, mash until smooth.Season with salt and pepper to taste.

My 25lbs reward for myself is to buy Dance Dance Revolution 2 for our Wii.

For some reason this computer I'm on won't let me post a picture so I'll leave you with this link to Amazon. I'm going to go buy it right after work on my way home.

I was thinking to myself a while back that I didn't want DDR 2 as much as I really wanted Lego: Harry Potter Years 5-7 but I thought, "Hmm I don't really need to be sitting on my butt playing a video game as a reward to myself. I need to be MOVING and getting healthier as a reward to myself.

I'm most excited for the 2 dance pad workout mode that comes with this game. It looks HARD but so much fun. I just need to figure out how to not make the dance pads slide all over the living room and I'll need to raise the TV a bit so that I won't hurt my neck trying to see it.

My other reward I gave myself was to eat the leftover ice cream cake from my birthday. I don't know if I'll eat it yet but knowing that I reached that goal I set for myself is enough. I can eat it anytime I want now. I might wait until all the holiday parties are over and eat it in the new year.

That's just over 2lbs a week average. I'm so happy with myself and I feel so great. I don't notice many differences in my appearance but today I wore a shirt I haven't worn since I started gaining back my weight last year.

I got recognized at my meeting tonight. It was fantastic to get my charm. I'm so happy and pleased with myself. I only have to do this again 2 more times (plus just under 10lbs past that). I expected my weight loss to be iffy this week but losing 2.6lbs pushed me almost to 27lbs. So so so so happy!!!

Sneaky Peeks!

Sneak Peek this morning showed me my week of gluttony didn't harm me! (Really it wasn't too bad, I didn't go over my weeklies.) 201.4. That would make 2.2 down and I know my scale is about 0.6 above the WW scale. I'm guessing at WI I get about a 2lb difference. That would account for the clothes I wear to WI.

Momentum vs. Points Plus

Josh hasn't been having much luck with Points Plus. He's lost 12.4lbs in 11 weeks. Now, yes, on paper that looks okay but the majority of that loss came in the first three weeks and after that he's been gaining and losing or just losing less than 0.5.

Last time his weight just fell off him and it was so easy. This time, it's pretty easy for me but not for him. I honestly don't think that it's the Points Plus system that's not working. I think that he doesn't want to give his all to it or that his loss might be the same on any plan because it's just harder to lose weight the 2nd time. Some people have to work harder than others the second time around.

I think Momentum will work for him because he wants it to work. But if it doesn't, he can always try Simply Filling.

Striving for your wedding-day weight or some other magic number on the scale can be daunting. It's much easier to reach for an incremental goal that promises sizable health benefits: Losing just 10 percent of your current body weight.

"So many projects in life are better managed by breaking them down into small chunks," observes Karen Miller-Kovach, MS, RD, chief scientist at Weight Watchers International. "Weight loss is no different."

But the body you've always wanted isn't all you'll get out of accomplishing that one starter goal. Here's what else you'll gain by losing 10 percent:
A Healthier Heart. By losing just 10 percent of your body weight, you can lower your cholesterol and reduce your blood pressure, says G. Ken Goodrick, PhD, psychologist. High cholesterol and elevated blood pressure are two major risk factors for heart disease.

  • Lower Risk of Type 2 Diabetes. If you're overweight, you're at increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, which means your body can't make enough, or properly use, insulin, a hormone that helps convert food to usable energy. By losing just 10 percent of your body weight, you'll improve your body's ability to use the insulin it makes, possibly preventing the onset of the disease, Miller-Kovach says. If you already have Type 2 diabetes, shedding that 10 percent may improve your symptoms and possibly prevent complications, she adds.
  • More Pep. "Just a 10-percent weight loss increases feelings of vigour and vitality," says Miller-Kovach. "You'll feel better and have more energy."
  • A Mental Edge. Losing 10 percent can give you the self-confidence and motivation you need to keep going. "Success builds on success," says Miller-Kovach. But be sure you recognise it. The 10% key chain your Weight Watchers leader gives you is part of that recognition. "Losing 10 percent is a milestone in the journey," says Miller-Kovach. "Once you get there, take the time to congratulate yourself on your efforts."
  • Reality Check. After losing 10 percent, you gain a sense of what it will take to lose the rest and reach your final goal weight. "It gives you a context in terms of saying, 'Am I willing to put in that much more effort to lose even more weight?'" Miller-Kovach says. If the answer is no, that's okay. "Some people only lose 10 percent and that's it," says Goodrick. If that's you, pat yourself on the back. "Health-wise, a 10-percent weight loss is a great achievement," Goodrick says.

Radio QOTD

A radio station here posted this as their question of the day on their facebook page and also opened it for callers on the air this morning:
Nicole Sherzinger admits she's been dieting since she 
was 14 years old. Is it ok for a 14 year old to diet?

The cohost of the morning show, named Robin, shared her story this morning. She said that she was a chubby kid at age 9 and her mom took her to a nutritionist. She slimmed down and from the sounds of it, didn't have a problem with weight after that. She considers herself average sized now and goes by the fit of her clothes rather than her weight. I believe she said that she struggled with thinking about her weight and food a lot, but seems to be okay now.

My opinion on the question is: I don't think dieting is the right mindset for anyone. If you change your eating habits for life and look at it as a permanent change rather than the temporary one of a diet, if you actually are overweight, then you'll be able to keep the weight off.

I tried to call in and share my story as well this morning but couldn't get through and needed to get to work.

When I was 16, my family decided to start on the Atkins diet. I have always been overweight, probably since about age 9/10. I am a TOTAL pasta person and it was torture to me to have meat forced on me and pasta taken away. I'm sure you all know, but Atkins is a diet where (at least in the first two weeks), you try eat fewer than 20g of carbs each day. Fiber knocks off carbs and fat is good for you. 

Well, to have the diet forced on me and my favourite foods taken away from me just made me cheat where I could (which wasn't very many places) and made me rebel against diets and healthy eating until I made that choice for myself and became self-motivated.

The moral of the story is: force a kid/teen/whoever to diet, they may rebel against it and defeat the purpose of the diet to begin with. This is why we will teach our children healthy eating right from the beginning of their lives.

Week 10 Goal Check In & Week 11 Goals

Week 10 Goals:
  • goal weight: 145 pounds: as always, any downward action is headed in the right way
  • 5 pounds a month: 5.2lbs lost this month :) goal achieved!
  • lose 7.2 pounds by new years: 1.2 lost this week, 6 left to go in 6 weeks. definitely do-able!!
  • one soda per day (2 on friday) IF I drink 8 cups of water per day: I did it until dinner tonight xD I had chugged 4c of water in less than an hour so that was pretty good anyways. I'll finish my other 4c before going to bed :)
  • try eat less than 7 weeklies on any given day (Tues, Wed (treat days) and Fri (pizza) an exception):  I did it and used around half. That's way better than last week.

Week 11 Goals:
  • goal weight: 145 pounds
  • 5 pounds a month: ALREADY DONE BUT LEAVING ON HERE ANYWAYS
  • lose 7.2 pounds by new years
  • one soda per day (2 on friday) IF I drink 8 cups of water per day
  • try eat less than 6 weeklies on any given day (Tues, Wed (treat days) and Fri (pizza) an exception)

I lost 1.2 lbs this week. That brings me to 21.8 lbs lost total :) I am 0.2 lbs away from my 10%. BLAH!

Now the RL people have started it...

Before now, all my shortcuts posts have been about online ads I've seen (I think). This one came from facebook, from a friend (someone I used to ride the bus to college with everyday and came into my work all the time). 

My words to her =/= my thoughts. My thoughts:

  • it's a marathon, not a race
  • you won't be able to keep the weight off
  • change your lifestyle, don't diet
  • shortcuts may work now, but don't expect them to keep working
  • that's just too fast
and then the kicker:
  • I wish I could lose weight that fast... 

I fully hope she gets her diet under control and keeps it off but I don't expect it. The weight piled on for a reason, how do you expect to keep it off if you don't fix the problem. 

That would be like mopping the floor but not fixing the leaky pipe that caused the mess. Yes, the floor is clean, but as soon as you stop mopping and let your guard down, your floor will be covered in water again because you've just mopped, you haven't fixed the pipe.

I don't like my way of thinking. It scares me, but at this point, I've bad mouthed the fast ways of losing weight, and I succeeded on WW, so I would never go and try it. I know that WW works for me and I know that with eating healthy I will lose the weight eventually and I will be eating a diet that I can maintain for the rest of my life.

Ticker Challenge #2 Begins

Two months

Woohoo! As of November 13, I've been on WW for two months. I'm happy with my progress and still going strong. I hope to lose 7.2lbs by Jan 3 (first new years WI) that's 7 weeks and that will put me at 200lbs and let me start the new year in ONEDERLAND! :)
